Peppers

Pepper plants grow well here in central Georgia. They give you a lot of production with minimal effort, so they are great even if you don’t have much garden space. From mild to flaming hot, there is likely a pepper for your taste. They can also be very ornamental plants, bearing fruit that is yellow, green, orange, red, and even purple.

You want to consider how hot you want your peppers to be. The Scoville scale represents the measurement of heat in a pepper, shown in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). A bell pepper may have an SHU of zero, but some of the hottest varieties can get up to 1.5 million SHUs or more. Here are some of the varieties I have planted.

  • Bell, 0 SHU
  • Banana, 0-500 SHU
  • Jalapeno, 3,500-5,000 SHU
  • Serrano, 10,000-25,000 SHU
  • Cayenne, 30,000-50,000 SHU
