I plant my watermelons in small hills of 5-6 seeds each, planted about an inch into the soil. Two hills, 5 feet apart, meets my needs. Once the plants come up, you can thin them down to 2-3 plants. Just bear in mind that watermelons plants are going to cover a lot of space. They can grow to as long as 20 feet in length.
